NFNPA receive wildlife £45,000 funding from New Forest RDPE

Comma Butterfly in the New Forest
Wildlife hotspots and important habitats will be the focus of a new project in the New Forest thanks to European funding.

The New Forest National Park Authority has received just over £45,000 from the New Forest RDPE (Rural Development Programme for England) Leader Programme for a one year pilot project to work with a small number of local community groups and parish councils to develop community wildlife plans.

The wildlife plans will identify habitats such as grassland, hedgerows, ponds, rivers and woodland and the wildlife species that live in them. The aim is to help local residents better understand the importance of where they live and how changes in wildlife management and restoration projects will enhance these areas.

The parishes of Godshill, Hordle, Landford, Marchwood, Milford on Sea, New Milton and West Wellow have been chosen as pilot areas. In each area community wildlife champions will receive training from a project officer and work with the Land Advice Service to lead survey work and become local experts on natural environment issues.

Kathryn Boler, External Funding Officer at the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘This project will help New Forest communities to better understand the wildlife around them so that they can help to protect key habitats and species in future years.

‘It is a great opportunity for people with an interest in wildlife to get involved and find out what is on their doorstep.’

Sally Igra, New Forest RDPE (Leader) Programme Manager at New Forest District Council, said: ‘The local action group was very pleased to support this project which will help residents of the New Forest to gain a better knowledge of the wildlife in their parishes.’

NFNPA - New Forest Tour advert aims to reduce animal accidents

$

0
A new ad campaign on this year’s New Forest Tour to remind drivers to look out for animals on roads in the north of the Forest is sure to catch people’s attention.

Last year there were 46 road traffic accidents involving commoners’ animals on the B3078 and B3079. These busy roads across the north of the New Forest bucked the overall trend of fewer accidents.

Now, for the first time, the entire back of one of the New Forest Tour’s open top buses carries an image of ponies at sunset with the slogan ‘Ponies don’t dent they die’, written by 14-year-old Oliver Smith, who won the 2011 competition ‘saving ponies through art’. Oliver was delighted to hear that his slogan is once again hitting the headlines. He said: ‘First it was a poster, then road signs and now it’s on the back of a bus!’

Nigel Matthews, Community and Visitor Services Manager at the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘This year has got off to a good start. The number of animal accidents across the Open Forest by the end of June was only 40, compared to 64 in the same period last year.

‘However, we wanted to remind drivers in the north to be careful. The image on the bus by photographer Mike Read reminds us that animals are on the road day and night.’

Head Agister Jonathan Gerrelli said: ‘It is the law to report all accidents as soon as possible, and within 24 hours. However 31 accidents were not reported last year. Not only is this distressing for the injured animal but also for the Agisters - we work long hours in often difficult circumstances. It is our job to find the animal and often to end its suffering. Failure to report an accident promptly may result in unnecessary suffering to the animal - something which could lead the Police to take further action.’

Graham Ferris, Chairman of the Commoners Defence Association, said: ‘The Commoners’ animals are vital to the New Forest since their grazing keeps the Forest the way we have all come to appreciate. The animals have right of way and don’t understand that cars are dangerous. By reminding drivers to watch out for the animals, we hope to reduce the number of accidents.’

The New Forest Tour is the perfect way to promote safe driving around the Forest. Not only is it seen by thousands of people but one of its main purposes is to reduce traffic on New Forest roads.

This specially-branded New Forest Tour bus is on the new red route which travels through Sandy Balls Holiday Centre at Godshill, Ashurst, Lyndhurst, Burley, Ringwood, and for the first time through the centre of Fordingbridge until 16 September.

If you witness or are involved in an accident involving a pony, donkey, cow, pig or sheep, call the Police (999 for an emergency or 101 if it’s not an emergency). Animal emergency hotline cards also give you the numbers to call if you see sick, injured or distressed animals. Cards are available from garages and Local Information Points across the New Forest. To stock the cards contact the New Forest National Park Authority at enquiries@newforestnpa.gov.uk.

NFNPA - Sculpture unveiling marks beginning of national pilot project celebrating New Forest rivers

$

Becton Bunny, Jacobs Gutter, Highland Water and Dark Water - these are just some of the streams in the New Forest which are as fascinating as their names.

Now the New Forest National Park Authority has received a Defra awarded grant to devise a way for whole communities to work together for the benefit of their local rivers, streams and coastine, with the results contributing to a nationwide rollout.

The Millings Chandelier
by Trudi Lloyd Williams
at The Mill, Gordleton.
The project was launched with the unveiling of a striking sculpture entitled the ‘Millings Chandelier’ at The Mill at Gordleton Hotel & Restaurant on Sunday (August 19).

The Mill, at Silver Street, Hordle near Lymington, and which sits on the Avon Water, features a range of sculptures by high profile local and national artists. This latest dramatic addition by Lymington-based Trudi Lloyd-Williams is suspended across the river. It is made from upcycled waste from the hotel and restaurant - glass and plastic bottles and copper from water pipes and a hot water tank. - in keeping with the ethos of the business, which incorporates many environmentally-friendly practices.

Trudi has often used rivers as her inspiration for sculptures including a series of planted rafts for her Master’s degree floating on the River Lavant at West Dean College, West Sussex, and for a client in London.

She said: ‘I find the whole aspect of water, rivers and flooding fascinating, particularly where we live with the coastal area and the effect of the sea.

‘It’s the first time I have suspended a piece over the river, which is a very volatile stretch and can go up and down by over two metres!’

Liz Cottingham, owner of The Mill at Gordleton, said: ‘The river and caring for the environment is at the heart of my business and I love seeing the seasons change, so having a sculpture reflecting the river is a perfect addition to our range of pieces in the garden.

‘I am delighted the National Park is leading on this project to encourage more people to connect with their rivers as we do, and to collectively come up with a plan to sustain them.’

New Forest National Park Authority Chief Executive Alison Barnes said: ‘Rivers and streams are vital in sustaining our internationally-important and unique New Forest habitats which are home to a wide variety of wildlife species, many of which are rare.

‘We will be working with national charity Pond Conservation and local communities to look at what they value about their rivers, streams and coastline, what the main issues are and how we can work together to tackle them.

‘This beautiful sculpture is a real celebration of the river at The Mill and we hope a whole range of people and organisations will join us in valuing this precious resource and improving it for the future.’

The New Forest River Catchment Project is trialling a new locally-based approach to working with stakeholders to achieve a greater appreciation of the water environment and commitment to joint projects to improve it. The initial phase is now under way and has already started to talk with local partners and communities, with a report due by the end of the year. Work is currently concentrating on the Becton Bunny at Barton-on-Sea and the Sowley and Hatchet streams with their associated small lakes near Beaulieu. If this approach is successful we hope it will be continued to cover the other New Forest streams and coastline.

To have your say on the priorities for improvements to the New Forest’s water environment in general or one of the streams mentioned, or if you would like to be considered for any future practical volunteer opportunities, email wildlife@newforestnpa.gov.uk.

Due to popular demand, and the most successful August ever, the New Forest Tour has been extended to Sunday 14 October.

Family enjoying a New Forest Tour
Now visitors have an extra four weeks to explore the New Forest National Park and take in the spectacular views of its stunning landscape on the open top buses.

The hop on, hop off Tour is the perfect way to explore the New Forest whilst leaving the car at home. The Tour has two interchangeable routes that stop at key villages and tourist attractions and there is room onboard for bikes. New for this year is a GPS activated commentary for passengers to find out more about the history and culture of the Forest.

The green route visits Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Beaulieu and Lymington and stops at the National Motor Museum, and Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway.

The red route stops at popular holiday destination Sandy Balls Holiday Park at Godshill, plus Ashurst, Lyndhurst, Burley, Ringwood and, for the first time, goes through the centre of Fordingbridge.

David Harrison, Lead Member for Transport at the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘Feedback from this year’s New Forest Tour has been fantastic. In August the service carried over 15,000 passengers – our most successful month to date. Not only is it a great contributor to the local economy but reduces the number of  cars on New Forest roads too.

‘In 2011 over 147,000 private car miles were saved by the Tour and its customers generated a contribution of nearly £500,000 to the local economy. We are on course for more success in 2012.’

New Forest Tour customers receive a New Forest Tour Official Guide, which includes a Brand New Forest card with offers available at businesses along the route, including places to eat and drink, shops, and attractions.

A range of flexible ticket options is available including a two-day ticket valid on both routes (adults £14), and group tickets for up to five people at £28 a day.

The Environment Agency remains responsible for coastal and river flooding.

As part of the council’s role, it is developing a Local Flood Risk Management Strategy and needs residents to highlight flooding hotspots in their area.

The New Forest National Park Authority is celebrating after receiving an external publications ‘oscar’ for its newspaper Park life.

From left to right: New Forest Post Senior Ad Manager Jo London; Newsquest Hampshire Regional Ad Manager Shelley Gorman; New Forest National Park Authority Communications Manager Hilary Makin; New Forest National Park Authority Chief Executive Alison Barnes; New Forest National Park Authority Communications Officer Karen Evans-McDaid gain gold at the CIPR Wessex Awards for Best External Publication Park life.
The National Park Authority was named gold winner in the Best External Publication category of the 2012 Wessex and Channel Islands Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) PRide Awards, announced at The Ageas Bowl, Southampton.

This year saw over 100 of the region’s leading public relations practitioners attend the annual awards ceremony, hosted by Capital FM South Coast's breakfast show presenter Zoe Hanson.

The National Park Authority worked with Newsquest to revamp the design of Park life and include it in the distribution of the New Forest Post newspaper which, with advertising, cut costs by almost 50%. It also distributes around 15,000 additional copies each year at events and community outlets around the Forest and is available online at www.newforestnpa.gov.uk/living-in/park-life.

New Forest National Park Authority Chief Executive Alison Barnes said: ‘Park life is packed full of news, events and information about how to get involved in caring for the National Park. It is an important way to talk to residents and visitors about the work we are doing to protect this spectacular landscape, help people to understand and enjoy the area, and to support its communities. We’re delighted that this has been recognised by the CIPR Pride Awards.’

The CIPR PRide Awards, sponsored nationally by Precise, PRWeek and RedBrand, received over 1,000 entries from freelancers, consultancies and in-house teams across 12 UK regions and nations. The judging process for the PRide Awards is rigorous with a national panel of industry experts assessing the shortlisted entries and choosing the winners. The 2012 Chairs of Judges, Gill Dandy FCIPR, Senior Consultant at The Centre for Strategy and Communication, and Chris Genasi FCIPR, Senior Consultant at APCO Worldwide, assisted in ensuring a fair and consistent judging process.

The award commendation read: ‘The campaign brief was clear and well thought out. They understood their target audience and used several tactics to get their message across. Innovative use of external advertising meant that they were able to reduce their overall costs. The achievement of nearly 50% in cost reduction is to be congratulated.’

CIPR CEO, Jane Wilson MCIPR, said: ‘The Wessex and Channel Islands CIPR PRide Awards celebrate the best PR and communications campaigns and teams from across the region. The sheer number of high quality entries received this year, especially when things are still pretty tough out there economically, is testament to a thriving regional industry. The CIPR PRide Awards represent the best, most creative and most effective public relations work across the UK and to win an award is a great achievement.’

The CIPR is the professional body for public relations and public affairs practitioners in the UK. With 9,000 members involved in all aspects of public relations, it is the largest body of its type in Europe.

After launching the visitor gift scheme 6 months ago, New Forest Hotels have successfully raised £4,800 for the New Forest Trust. The funds will go towards the conservation, protection and improvement of the New Forest.

The Visitor Gift Scheme is supported by a number of local companies, with the money raised a vital income going towards local organisations as well as the forest. We have raised this impressive amount by asking our guests to donate a voluntary £1 on departure. Our sister pub, The Drift Inn, also donates a penny from every pint sold to the scheme.

Chairman of the New Forest Trust, Rick Manley, says “The Visitor Gift Scheme is now an integral part in helping the New Forest. It is great to see that New Forest Hotels have been so successful with collecting donations. Thank you to all the staff at the hotels, alongside the generous customers which have donated.”

Michaela Lisle, Managing Director of New Forest Hotels, says “It is great to help such a local charity, our customers visit the New Forest to enjoy its vast beauty so it is important that we help maintain this. Our guests have responded very well when being told about the donation. They enjoy the areas so are more than happy to help. We aim to continue to raise as much money as possible and look forward to hearing how the money is going to be used.”

Drive safely across the New Forest this winter

People who regularly drive across the New Forest are being urged to drive extra carefully this winter.

new forest ponies road accident prevention

The New Forest National Park Authority and the Verderers want to remind people to be extra vigilant on their way to and from work; particularly after the clocks go back at the end of October.

Nigel Matthews, Community & Visitor Services Manager at the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘It can often take a while for people to adjust to the darker evenings and there is usually a significant rise in accidents in November.

‘A lot of ponies wear reflective collars but many don’t, so drivers should look out for dark-coloured ponies which are often more difficult to see. It is important to drive at a sensible speed, within the 40mph limit, when safe to do so and to make sure you can stop if an animal steps onto the road at the last minute. Ponies have no road sense so it is up to the driver to be extra cautious.

‘It’s not just the animals that are at risk in an accident. If the driver is speeding the results could be catastrophic for their passengers and vehicle too.’

Head Agister, Jonathan Gerrelli, added: ‘Now is a timely reminder that we all need to be extra careful when driving in the New Forest.  It is the law to report all accidents as soon as possible. However 31 accidents were not reported last year which resulted in unnecessary suffering for the animals.  Anyone who gives information leading to a successful prosecution can claim a reward of up to £1,000.

‘The Verderers have issued several rewards in recent years and a number of drivers have been successfully prosecuted for failing to stop and report an accident with a Forest animal.

‘Drivers who do report accidents are unlikely to be prosecuted, but if a driver fails to report an accident and is caught, the Verderers will always encourage the police to prosecute and the police are generally very willing to do so.’

Driving tips:
  • Be ready to stop - ponies may step out even when they’ve seen you approaching
  • Drive slowly, especially at night and when other cars are approaching with their headlights on
  • Give animals grazing by the side of the road a wide berth
  • Take extra care when there are animals on the verges on both sides of the road – they may cross to join their friends.
  • Remember that deer easily jump the fences alongside roads like the A337, A31 and A35 and when there is one deer more will usually follow
  • The faster you are going, the greater the damage will be to the animal, your car and your passengers - start your journey early so you don’t have to hurry.
If you witness an accident:
If you witness or are involved in an accident involving a pony, donkey, cow, pig or sheep, call the Police (999 for an emergency or 101 if it’s not an emergency). Animal emergency hotline cards also give you the numbers to call if you see sick, injured or distressed animals. Cards are available from garages and Local Information Points across the New Forest. They witnessed the Roundheads fighting the Cavaliers during the English Civil War, Elizabeth I defeating the Spanish Armada, and survived being used for ship building during the Napoleonic Wars.

Now for the first time you can find out more about the New Forest’s ancient trees – some of which are reputed to be over 1,000 years old – in an interactive exhibition.

The month long display at the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst is sponsored by ExxonMobil at the Fawley Refinery and attempts to unravel the mystery of these ancient trees.

Bryan Wilson, Senior Tree Officer at the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘The New Forest is of exceptional importance for ancient and veteran trees. It has a greater concentration than anywhere else in Western Europe – nearly 1,500 trees have been recorded and we know there are more to find.

‘They can be discovered almost anywhere. However, the greatest numbers survive within the Ancient and Ornamental New Forest woodlands that once formed a great medieval hunting ground which remains remarkably intact to this day.’

The exhibition runs from 20 October to 25 November 2012 at the New Forest Centre which is open every day from 10am- 4.30pm.

The New Forest Tour is celebrating after being awarded a highly commended at the 2012 Virgin Holiday Responsible Tourism Awards – the Oscars of the responsible tourism industry.

The Tour received its commendation in the Best Responsible Transport category, beating stiff competition from around the world. There were over 1,600 nominations for a number of categories that were whittled down by a carefully selected panel of industry experts.

David Harrison, Lead Member for Transport at the New Forest National Park, said: ‘The New Forest Tour partners were delighted to be recognised for such a high profile award. The Tour plays an important role in reducing the impact of traffic and transport on the special qualities of the National Park and provides a memorable experience for thousands of customers during the summer months. I am delighted that the growth and on-going success of the Tour has been recognised in this way.

‘In 2011 the Tour saved over 147,000 private car miles and its customers generated a contribution of nearly £500,000 to the local economy. Its popularity led to the 2012 operation being extended for a further six weeks.’

Justin Francis, founder of The Responsible Tourism Awards and Managing Director of responsibletravel.com, said: ‘Once again we reveal the responsible tourism agenda-setters, the remarkable winners of the Responsible Tourism Awards. We've cast the net far and wide and received over 1,000 nominations for organisations of all sizes and types globally. It gives me great confidence that responsible tourism is flourishing, and provides further inspiration for our industry.’

Amanda Wills, Managing Director, Virgin Holidays, headline sponsor of the Awards said: ‘The Responsible Tourism Awards serve to remind us of what can be achieved with ingenuity, passion and commitment. They are also an opportunity for us to stop, be inspired, and remember why being 'responsible' in business should be - must be - second nature.’

The Awards were presented on World Responsible Tourism Day at the World Travel Market in London.

New Forest Walks - Ashurst to Brockenhurst Video

Whether you are a local or visitor to the New Forest, this video on New Forest Walks will take you on a real life hike from Ashurst to Brockenhurst. I found the quality of the video not that clever but the guide and commentry are excellent and a must see for anyone interested in viewing the inner depths of the Forest.

The walk starts near to the campsite at Ashurst and ends with the guide consuming a pint at a well known Pub at Brockenhurst - great way to finish a walk :)

Children will love this walk as it will put them directly in touch with nature and a very good chance of spotting Deer and other wildlife - so come on Mum and Dad, get those wellies on and get out and enjoy one of our New Forest Walks with the kids.
